My friend Doug, a Los Angeles Deputy Sherif

I was lucky enough to meet a deputy sheriff. His name is Doug.

I learned lots of things when I met Deputy Sheriff Doug Preciado. I was impressed that even when he is not on duty he carries a handgun.
But that's not all I learned.
Doug told me the reason he chose to become a policeman was because he wanted to help and make a difference in people's lives.
Doug has been a police officer for thirty-four years.
He graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Police Academy on the day of his 23rd birthday!
After he graduated from the academy, he also worked in the Los Angeles County Jail before working as a police officer on the streets of Los Angeles.
They carry lot of gear : handcuffs, pepper spray, a hand-held radio, a flashlight and a bullet proof jacket when they patrol the streets. They also carry a duty belt. It has a holster for the handgun and extra bullets. All this equipment is very heavy: it weighs thirty pounds (about 15 kg).

Doug told me that he never had to shoot anyone but he already got shot at. Luckily he was never hit or wounded
The biggest firearms that they carry are in the back of their patrol cars – these are big rifles or shotguns.
Police officers of Los Angeles have to practice shooting and qualify at least every three months. They have to qualify with a shotgun once a year.
Speed will kill you !!!
Doug has been in a number of car chases, and he told me that “speed will get you or others killed”. So, depending on where you are driving, if there are not too many people around you can drive faster than usual.
He told me about a chase at night going to 130 kilometres an hour on a street in Los Angeles, because there were not many cars in the area.
